The Exhibition “Rational use of Kola Peninsula natural resources”

The exhibition was founded in 1987. It shows the potentialities of new “noospheric” strategy of the Euro-Arctic region development, based on achievements of the Academy scientists and directed to broad international cooperation in the North of Europe. More than 1500 exhibits represent the history of the region natural resources’ development – from the first silver, pearl, amethyst, and potash mica mines of XIV-XVII to gigantic mining, chemical and smelting enterprises of the present. They are supplying the country with apatite, nickel, copper, iron, micas and ultra pure materials for electronic and rocket and space machinery. Prospective resources for new raw materials branches of economics are also presented at the exhibition.

At the Exhibition, one can make acquaintance with the outstanding achievement of home science and engineering – the Kola super-deep bore-hole: core samples from the 12km depth, the unique bore which arrived at this level, results of international investigations carried out through this deepest in the world “window into bowels”.

The KSC scientists’ developments are demonstrated at the exhibition, which had won the international recognition: “Versoil” – the sorbent for cleaning the water of oil pollution, “Bioreculate” – the remedy for recovery of disturbed soils, “Verpon” – ecologically clean substitute of soils, raising five-six-fold the fertility. Herbariums of rare and disappearing species of plants exemplify the saving of the “nature heritage”.

Scientific and informational sources of the Exhibition are invaluable aids of knowledge about the North, starting material of forming a present-day world outlook; on the latter depend prospects of realization the systems of non-destructive nature management.

Here, one can always receive a qualified consultation on prospects and conditions of realization the innovational suggestions represented at the exposition.

The Kola land is rich in semi-precious stones, decorative and facing rocks. In the collection of the exhibition are widely represented specimens from deposits of amazonite, amethyst, glendonite, garnet, eudialyte, astrophyllite, as well as art wares of them. Furnishings of the exhibition constitute the paintings of mineral crumbs and castings of glass-ceramics based on new technologies elaborated at the Kola science center of RAS in the 80ies. The exposition is crowned with rare minerals of Khibiny and Lovozero alkaline massifs. In the titles of these minerals the names are immortalized of outstanding pioneers, the early investigators of the Kola land.
