The Museum-Archives

The Museum-Archives “History of study and developing of the European North of Russia” of the Center of Barents Region humanitarian problems of Kola SC RAS was founded in 1974 by initiative of B.I.Koshechkin, the Presidium Chairman of the Northern branch of Geographical society of the USSR. In 1978 the museum was included in the nomenclature of RAS.

The idea of organizing the Museum met with support in broad scientific circles. Among participants of the museum’s organization and formation are outstanding scientists: academicians G.I.Goretsky, I.M.Kreps, I.G.Eichfeld, V.T.Kalinnikov, F.P.Mitrofanov, N.N.Melnikov, G.G.Matishov, corresponding member of RAS G.I.Gorbunov.

Big assistance in creation of the museum exposition and funds rendered families of the Kola North outstanding researchers - P.V.Vittenburg, M.N.Lavrova, I.K.Tikhomirov, N.V.Pinegin, R.L.Samoilovich, A.V.Sidorenko, A.E.Fersman, V.V.Charnolusky, I.V.Belkov, P.N.Chirvinsky, I.D.Batiyeva, A.A.Sakhorov, I.V.Bussen.

The museum funds are annually filled up with new documents, goods and books. Staff of Kola SC and people of Murmansk area take an active part in filling up the museum funds.

Kola SC of RAS is an advanced post of Russian science in the Extreme north. Kola SC was the first regional branch established by the USSR Academy of sciences. From reindeer teams – geological transport of the thirties - to space exploration – such is the way traversed by scientists of Kola SC during its lifetime.

The Museum-Archives is a subdivision of the Center of Barents region humanitarian problems of Kola SC RAS. It executes independent research effort on problems of ethno-cultural processes, preservation of historical and cultural heritage of the European North.

There are permanent expositions in the museum:

“History of archaeological discoveries”
“Ethnographical investigations”
“Kola seaboard”
“History of investigations of the Russian Academy of sciences in the Kola North in XVIII - XIX centuries”
“Complex Northern scientifi c and trade expedition”
“History of Kola Science Center of RAS”

On weekdays – 10am-18pm
