Deep transformation in socio-economical and political life of Russia after dissolution of the USSR and increasing processes of international integration in the sphere of economics, politics and culture cause in the XX-XXI considerable sharpening of existent and appearance of new humanitarian problems of global, regional and local scale. Along with the questions of historical and cultural heritage study and preservation, pointed need of scientific comprehension and monitoring of existent ethno-cultural and ethno-political processes appeared with the purpose of elaborating their possible development and minimization of negative social consequences. For solving these problems, Presidium of Kola SC RAS founded in May of 2004 the Barents Center of the Humanities (BCH) as detached scientific subdivision - branch of Kola SC. The basis for foundation of BCH was scientific body and material resources of International centre on development of science, culture and education in the Barents/Euro-Arctic Region (ICSCE).

Main tasks of BCH are: : development of research activities of historical, ethnological, cultural and anthropological types; collecting for museum and archiving of historical and cultural materials; propagation of historical, ethnological, socio-anthropological, ecological knowledge; developing of contacts in the fields of science, culture and education, as well as creation of opimality condition for upgrading the efficiency of international cooperation in the named spheres.

Scientific research activities. Centre of the Humanities is carrying out at present complex interdisciplinary investigations in the fields of history, ethnology and social anthropology. Traditionally, a special attention in the BCH activity is given to regional aspects: questions of study and saving the historical and cultural heritage, investigation of ethnic and cultural processes under the present-day situation in the Northwest of Russia. High emphasis is placed on scientific and enlighteting activity, first of all in the field of history of study and developing the European North, and history of formation and developing of science in the Kola Peninsula.

The research effort of the Centre is carried out in a close cooperation with units of KSC RAS (research institutes, Scientific archives of KSC RAS), with educational institutions of the Region, and with foreign colleagues.

Enlightening work within the frames of BCH KSC RAS activity is carried out by its units - the Museum of history of the study and developing of Russia European North, and the standing exhibition "Sustainable development of Murmansk oblast natural resources". Main forms of the work are general and thematic excursions, lectures, and consultations. BCH is also the base organization supporting the activity of regional branches of international public organizations "Econord" (Nordic Study Centre), and "Kola Center of Gender Research and Women's Studies"

Educational activity. BCH KSC RAS is the base organization for "North studies" chair activity. According to the agreement with the Kola Branch of Petrozavodsk State University, educational training for students of humanitarian faculty is organized here on history, ethnography, and sociology. According to the agreement on cooperation with Saint-Petersburg state institute of service and economics, a join organizational work is carried out on attraction of entrants and ensuring the conditions for educational sessions of external students. Results of the Centre's scientific work are actively introduced into the educational practice by means of methodical, consultative and magistral activity.
