Deep social, economic and political transformations in Russia in the XX-XXI centuries came with the collapse of the USSR and increasing processes of international integration in economics, politics and culture, caused considerable sharpening of existent, on the one hand, and on the other - appearance of new humanitarian problem of global, regional and local scales. Along with the tasks to study and preserve the historical and cultural heritage, the need in scientific comprehension and monitoring of existent ethno-cultural and ethno-political processes in aim to elaborate the possible development and to minimize the negative social consequences was appeared. To solve these problem, in May of 2004 Presidium of Kola SC RAS founded the Barents Center of the Humanities (BCH) as a scientific subdivision - branch of Kola SC. The basis of BCH was founded on the material and scientific resources of International Centre on Development of Science, Culture and Education in the Barents/Euro-Arctic Region (ICSCE).

Main tasks of BCH: to develop research activities in history, ethnology, culture and anthropology; to collect and save historical and cultural materials in the museum and archive; to enrich and diffuse historical, ethnological, socio-anthropological and ecological knowledge; to develop contacts in the fields of science, culture and education, as well as to create the optimal conditions to upgrade the efficiency of international cooperation.

Scientific research profile. The profile research areas of the BCH are multidisciplinary study on the fields of history, ethnology and social anthropology. The special attention in the BCH activity is given to regional aspects of studying and saving the historical and cultural heritage and researching the recent issues of ethnic and cultural processes in the Northwest of Russia. High emphasis is placed on scientific and enlightening activity, first of all in the field of history of exploration and developing the European North, and formation the scientific knowledge in the Kola Peninsula.

The research efforts of the Centre are carried out in a close cooperation with units of KSC RAS (research institutes and Scientific Archive of KSC RAS), and with educational institutions of Murmansk Region and foreign colleagues.

Museum-archive of BCH KSC RAS includes two different units - the Historical Museum-archive of the Russian European North studying and exploration and the standing exhibition "Sustainable use of Kola Peninsula natural resources". The main forms of these units activities are general and thematic excursions, lectures and consultations.

Educational activities. BCH KSC RAS is the base organization for the "Northern studies" department of the Kola Branch of Petrozavodsk State University. According to the agreement between BCH KSC RAS and the Kola Branch of Petrozavodsk State University the BCH organize educational training for students of humanitarian faculty on history, ethnography, and sociology.

According to the agreement on cooperation with Saint-Petersburg state institute of service and economics, a join organizational work is carried out to attract entrants and ensure the conditions for educational sessions of external students. Results of the Centre's scientific work are actively introduced into the educational practice by means of methodical, consultative and magistral activity.
